ANSWERS TO SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ADDICTION RECOVERY

Q: How can you be so confident your treatment approach has the highest probability of success?

A: It is wise to be wary of anybody who claims to have a high recovery rate with their system. In fact, it's important  to ask for data to back their claims. The only true definition of success is total abstinence combined with a spiritually based program, one day at a time, for the rest of one's life. This also  includes a relatively happy life with little or no desire to ever use again. Unfortunately, most people who have this affliction do not even come close to this level of success, this includes individuals who have been exposed to some level of treatment. At sober team, we put our best foot forward in an attempt to save as many people as we can.

Q: how do you help us?

A: During an intervention, we recommend what may be the best course of action for each individual. This includes dealing with insurance companies to find out what is covered, what is not, etc.. some families may not have any insurance at all.

Q: how long have you been around?

A: The founder of sober team had 21 years of sobriety followed by a relapse that lasted several years. He now has over 3 years of sobriety, he has learned a lot this time around, most importantly what tools to utilize to prevent a  relapse in the future.

Q: why do you need to do an intervention? The local support group told us that when my loved one is ready he/she will ask for help?

A: This simply is not true. It's archaic to think that somebody needs to hit a so called bottom in order to be ready to get help. Most people die or continue to suffer in immeasurable ways due to this obsolete way of thinking. In-fact empirical data suggests that most people need a time of forced abstinence before they actually begin to acknowledge the severity of their illness . We believe an intervention occurs at bottom. We also cut to the chase and expose the denial, co-dependency and enabling issues that take their form within families in many powerful ways.

Q: The local 12 step support group said that we don't necessarily need all of these services, as long as one shows up every night and becomes compliant a miraculous change will occur?

A: The 12 step program is the best self help group in the world, it states in the preamble "rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path." The equation becomes a little more complex when one has either a diagnosed or undiagnosed co morbid disorder. Alcoholics and drug addicts tend to self medicate due to an underlying mental issue, ie- chronic depression, bipolar disorder etc..  These people tend to have chronic relapses and may be labeled "constitutionally incapable in 12 step parlance." These same individuals may perform on a totally different level with the proper medication and a little cognitive behavioral therapy. It is important to note the paradox of having the disease progress to a level even more severe in nature when an individual relapses following a period of abstinence. The substance abuse tends to pick up where it left off and in many cases gets progressively worse.

Q: What is a sober coach and sober companion?

A: At sober team, we understand that it may not be realistic for a family member to get "locked up" in a treatment facility for months at a time. In-fact we believe that a tailor made out patient treatment plan may even be more effective. Without going into too much detail, this is due to the fact that in an inpatient facility you are truly cut off from the outside world, isolated from every day temptations for the most part. This may cause increased anxiety and a cabin fever effect not to mention the guilt and remorse of relinquishing one's responsibilities from home to be shipped off to a treatment facility. Over the years the majority of people got sober without any rehab at all.

Out patient allows you to live your life without a big interruption and allows the individual to continue on with their job etc.. This is where a sober companion may come in. After at least a 5 day 24/7 detox which may or may not include an inpatient facility  A 24/7 companion does whatever it takes to prevent one from getting high or drunk that day. This may include having the ability to cut off their finances or to simply act as a physical barrier between  the individual and the drink or drug. This is not a babysitting service. This is a trained professional who has been there "themselves" Withdrawal and post acute withdrawal is without question a grueling and debilitating experience. The sober companion's job is akin to making sure a cancer patient gets their chemo on a daily basis. A sober coach is similar to a sober companion however they do not stay with the client 24/7, but they may be at their beck and call. Your sober team helps the client transition into a real world environment with it's accompanying temptations and stresses.
